Nilamel Panchayat was once a region of paddy fields and highlands. The name “Nilamel” is believed to have originated from the idea of a land filled area or from the Sri Dharmashasta temple in the highlands. It is believed that the old name was “Nilakkal” and later changed to “Nilamel”. It is said that the family of “Nilamel Veedu” ruled most of the area and the place name was derived from their name.
