Panchayat

A Panchayat is a body of elected representatives of the people to administer the affairs of the Panchayat Raj institutions. In the case of a Gram Panchayat, it is the main body that implements the decisions of the Gram Sabha and carries out the day-to-day administration. The main components of a Panchayat are: President: He is the head of the Panchayat. He presides over the meetings and supervises the overall activities of the Panchayat. Vice President: He assumes the responsibilities in the absence of the President. Ward Members: Representatives elected from each ward of the Panchayat. Standing Committees: These are sub-committees formed to facilitate decision-making, such as finance, development, welfare, health, education, etc.

Nilamel Panchayat is a midland area in the Chadayamangalam block of Kollam district. Located about 25 km from Kottarakkara, this panchayat has an area of 22.02 sq km. It is a land of parallel hills and valleys, and the tributaries of the Ithikkara River originate here.The panchayat is bordered by Chadayamangalam Panchayat to the north, Kadakkal Panchayat to the east, and Pazhayakunnummel and Kilimanoor Panchayats of Thiruvananthapuram district to the south. Two main roads pass through the panchayat, which has a road network of 85 km, mainly in the north-south and east-west directions.The southern part is mountainous in terms of topography. Pullipcha Kunnu in Banglakunnu ward is an area of about 160 m above sea level. History of Grama Panchayat

Nilamel Panchayat was once a place of paddy fields and highlands. It is believed that the name “Nilamel” was derived from the idea of an area formed by filling the land or from the Sri Dharmashasta temple in the highlands. It is believed that the old name was “Nilakkal” and later changed to “Nilamel”. It is said that the family “Nilamel Veedu” ruled most of the area and the place name was derived from their name.
